The Anaheim Ducks were originally called the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. They are a professional men ice hockey team based in Anaheim, California. They are members of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). Within a short span, they have shown fantastic results and are the current Stanley Cup champions, after defeating the Ottawa Senators in five games post-season. The Ducks have always played their home games at Honda Center, formerly called Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim.

The Walt Disney Company formed the Anaheim Ducks in 1991. The original name was given after the film, The Mighty Ducks. This movie showed a group of teens winning a hockey game successfully.

The logo is a webbed foot forming a “D” followed by the other letters of the word “Ducks” in capitals. The text is in gold with orange and black accents, giving a three dimensional appearance. Jerseys

The old jerseys used jade, aubergine (eggplant), white and gray as primary colors. After the team was purchased from the Walt Disney Company, Brian Burke sought inspiration from the United States Military Academy, and gave the jersey diagonal gold, white, black, and orange stripes down the arms and waist, with the word “Ducks” on the front. The orange color pays tribute to Orange County, where Anaheim is located.

The 2007-08 jerseys, like all NHL teams, changed over to the new Reebok Edge jerseys. There is only a minor change with a small NHL crest below the neck. The official mascot for the Ducks is an anthropomorphized duck by the name of Wild Wing. He wears a Ducks jersey with 93 on the back, the year the Ducks became the NHL team.

In July, the Ducks traded young sniper Lupul, defenseman Ladislav Smid, a 2007 first round draft pick, and a second round pick in 2008, to Edmonton in exchange for the famous defenseman Chris Pronger. The team finished the last season with 43 wins, 27 losses, and 12 overtime losses. They became third in their division. In the playoffs, they won over the Flames in conference quarterfinals and over Avalanche in the semifinals, but were defeated by the Oilers in the finals. They had a fantastic year in 2006-07, beating the Ottawa Senators to take home the Stanley Cup. The team now has new faces Todd Bertuzzi, Mathieu Schneider, Jean Sebastien Giguere and Travis Moen.

History

On the day of the NHL Entry Draft, they traded the 17th overall pick Patrick O’Sullivab to the Los Angeles Kings for veteran Slovakian Pavol Demitra. Gaborik returned in January 2007 from his injury. The Wild made the playoffs in 2007 for the second time in team history, but lost to the Anaheim Ducks in the Stanley Cup championship in the first round. Brian Rolston was chosen new captain in January 2007. On January 24, the Wild recalled Josh Harding from Houston of the American Hockey League. The franchise, five days later, reassigned Josh Harding to Houston of the AHL.

The Wild are not the first NHL team to play in Minnesota. The North Stars played there from 1967 to 1993, when owner Norm Green moved the team to Dallas, Texas and renamed it the Stars. On June 25 1997, the NHL officially awarded expansion team franchises to Minnesota, Atlanta, Nashville, and Columbus, Ohio.

The National Hockey League awarded Minnesota an expansion franchise [1997]. This meant that they would play in the 2000-2001 season. The 6 finalist team names for this season included: Minnesota Northern Lights, Minnesota Voyageurs, Minnesota Blue Ox, Minnesota Freeze, Minnesota White Bears and Minnesota Wild.

In 2000-01, the Minnesota Wild did not have much success. However, it showed that it could go on and improve with every season. One game during this season that was worth taking note of included the first visit of the Dallas Stars. The crowd turnout for this match was a record one with over 18,000. In the following season, the Wild got off to a flying start and claimed 1 point out of their first 7 games. Yet, they finished in the last place. The point to note was that the team showed strong signs of improvement compared to the previous season. As a second-year speedster, Gaborik had a good season with 30 goals, while Andrew Brunette scored 69 points.

In the 2003-04, the Wild were short-handed. The team struggled in the first month, but they managed to get their two important left-wingers signed. However, the problem they faced was getting into game shape, and their struggles carried on through November. Though the team finished with strong wins, it could not climb out of its weak position. The Wild were the last to finish in the competitive Northwest Division. As the season progressed, it was clear that the Wild were preparing to trade some of their older players. This would include players like Brad Bombardir and Jim Dowd.

In the 2004-05 season, there was no play because there was a lockout. Former Wild player Sergei Zholtok died of a heart condition during a match. It is known that Zholtok died in the arms of Darby Hendrickson [Minnesotan and former Wild player].

In the 2005-06 season, the Wild again finished last in the Northwest Division. They were 8 points behind Vancouver.

For the 2006-07 season, the Wild signed veteran Free Agents, Mark Parrish, Kim Johnsson, and Keith Carney. The Wild made it to the playoffs in 2007. This was the 2nd time they did so. However, they were knocked out by the Stanley Cup Champion Anaheim Ducks in the first round.

The Los Angeles Kings is a professional ice hockey team based in Los Angeles, California. They are a member of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was founded in 1967 in Los Angeles, California. The logo of the team from 1967-88 was a crown, which the team members use on their jerseys. They played at the Forum in Inglewood, California, a suburb of the Los Angeles area, their home for thirty-two years and then moved to Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles, to begin the 1999-2000 season. This is the place where many other prominent teams struggle with each other e.g. the Los Angeles Clippers and the Los Angeles Lakers etc.

The Los Angeles Kings have not had any great success, their win just once being in 1990-91. They qualified for the post-season play after failing to get out of the first round 12 times in the 24 seasons. They advanced just once to the second round. Their biggest credit was when they won their conference championship for the first time in history and advanced to the Stanley Cup finals in the 1992-93 seasons, where they lost the series to the Montreal Canadians in five games. Their closest rival is the Anaheim Ducks, who play just 35 miles south in Anaheim, California.

History

From 1988 to 1996, Wayne Gretzky, one of the most successful players, was a part of the team. The Kings have had great players like Bill “Cowboy” Flett, Eddie “The Jet” Joyal, Eddie “the Entertainer” Shack, and Real “Frenchy” Lemieux. They were the ones to introduce the Kings to the NHL in the first few seasons. The players got colorful nicknames by owner Cooke, who thought this would add popularity to the sport in South California. He insisted that radio and television use the nicknames when referring to the above players.

The team suffered due to poor management after two good seasons. In 1972, the Kings hired Bob Pulford as their coach. The team played good five seasons under his supervision. On June 23 1975, the team acquired a great figure, Marcel Dionne. He helped his team get the second place in the James Norris Division. He lasted with the Kings for 12 years and was later traded to the New York Rangers.

On May 2006, Marc Crawford was hired as the 21st head coach of the Los Angeles Kings. On February 28 2007, the Kings and the NHL announced that the Kings would open the 2007-08 National Hockey League at the new O2 Arena in London, England. The special “NHL Premiere 2007” series will be the Kings first game outside of North America. They have signed five unrestricted free agents, including center Michal Handzus, left wings Ladislav Nagy and Kyle Calder, and defensemen Tom Preissing, Brad Stuart and Jon Klemm.

Like all NHL teams for the 2007-08 seasons, the Kings have changed their jerseys to new Reebok Edge jerseys. The logo did not change but have brought a new style with the stripes.
